Description
Louis Latour embodies a historic Burgundy house that views wine as a faithful expression of the terroir. Founded in 1797, the Maison Louis Latour has built its reputation on a very clear principle: to intervene with precision, whilst ensuring the voice of the vineyard is not overshadowed. In Louis Latour Clos Vougeot Grand Cru, made exclusively from Pinot Noir, this philosophy finds one of its most noble expressions. The legendary Clos Vougeot Grand Cru, in the very heart of the Côte de Nuits, encapsulates centuries of monastic history, winemaking tradition and an almost sacred relationship with the land. Its soils of clay, chalk and gravel, combined with Burgundy’s continental climate, impart depth, tension and a structure that distinguishes great age-worthy reds. Sourced from vines averaging 40 years of age, this Grand Cru is born in a place where every decision matters and where greatness depends not on excess, but on precision.
Winemaking
The harvest of Louis Latour Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is carried out by hand to preserve the quality of the fruit from the very first moment. In the cellar, the grapes ferment in open vats using a traditional method, aiming for measured and elegant extraction. The wine is then aged for between 10 and 12 months in new, medium-toasted French oak barrels, crafted by Louis Latour’s own cooperage. Far from overpowering the wine, this ageing process supports it, reinforces its structure and complements the vineyard’s natural nobility right through to bottling.
Flavour
On the nose, Louis Latour Clos Vougeot Grand Cru reveals notes of undergrowth, clove and blackberry, with a serious, deep and subtly spiced background. On the palate, it is silky on entry but soon reveals its true depth: ripe black fruit, hints of liquorice, firm tannins and a full-bodied, enveloping and persistent texture. This is neither a light nor a complacent Pinot Noir, but a red wine with poise, length and contained energy. The long, tannic finish leaves an impression of classic nobility, ideal for those seeking a great Burgundy red with ageing potential.
