Buy Wine from Somontano
In the middle-east of Huesca province, you can find the Somontano region, one of the most characteristic lands of Aragón, at the foothills of the Pyrenees; actually that is the reason of its name. The production area encompasses 43 municipalities divided in three well differenced zones: the Pyrenean mountain range, the base of the mountains and the plains.
Somontano Climate and Soil Characteristics
The climate is continental, with a great temperature amplitude between seasons. Cold, dry winds that blow frequently, though the ambient is softened by the protective screen of the Pyrenean barrier. Plains enjoy plenty of sunlight hours, and the average temperature is 11ºC and rainfalls are around 500mm.
The soil in Somontano has dark chalky soils with high calcareous content. Most of them are soft material soils, sandstones and loams, poor in organic matter but with the appropriate permeability.
Wines of Somontano
The production in Somontano includes red, rosé, claretes and white wines. Between the red varieties, you can find: Garnacha, Moristel (with great personality and refinement), Tempranillo, Parraleta, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Amongst the white grape varieties the following stand out: Macabeo, Garnacha Blanca, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay and Alcañón.
