Buy Wine from Alicante
In the south of the Valencian Community, the province of Alicante has had its own appellation of origin since 1987 and currently has more than 14,000 hectares of vineyards where the Monastrell and Moscatel varieties reign supreme. The production area of this appellation covers three distinct areas: the upper and middle basin of the Vinalopó, which extends from the interior to almost the coastal city of Alicante; the area of La Marina, north of the coast, stretching from the Iberian System to the cape of La Nao; and an intermediate territory, the region of Comtat, which includes the old vineyards of the Alicante mountains. For this reason, there are different climatic characteristics between the different regions. The Vinalopó area is the driest, with a continental climate of extreme temperatures in summer and winter and low rainfall. On the other hand, the climate in La Marina is purely Mediterranean with many hours of sunshine and more humid than the previous one. In El Comtat, the climate is Mediterranean mountain climate with not very extreme temperatures.
The soils of the Alicante DO are sandy and sandy-loam soils, porous and permeable, which allow the drainage of water generated by rainfall while avoiding water retention and therefore waterlogging. The typical red varieties are Monastrell, Garnacha Tintorera and Bobal, while for the production of white wines the Moscatel de Alejandría varieties are used to obtain very fruity sweet wines. In addition, foreign varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Pinot Noir are also grown.
In the Alicante DO, Enrique Mendozais undoubtedly the most consolidated and pioneering winery in the entire appellation.
