Bodegas Dominio de Atauta is Miguel Sánchez's whim. He founded this winery aiming to offer a pleasant wine for immediate intake; the prevailing trend is mature wines with lots of fruit and ample, sweet tannins, this is what Víctor Rodríguez, technical manager of the project tells us.
Dominio de Atauta's winery is located in the Eastern end of Ribera del Duero within Soria province (the province with cooler temperatures). A total of 15 hectares of vineyards are located in the Atauta Valley, at around 1,000 metres altitude so the thermal contrast between day and night are sudden, could even reach 20ºC difference, which stimulates polyphenols synthesis, and achieving excellent maturity.
How are Dominio de Atauta vineyards? The oldest vine is over 60 years old, trained with the goblet system, as commonly done in Ribera del Duero, so the performance is scarce (less than 1 kg a grapevine). Soils are poor with sandy-clay texture on the lower layer and solid limestone rock, originating a whitish colour on the surface of the land. They also have a small plot with pre-phylloxera vines, around 160 years old, on sandy compact soils that avoided the attack of the pest. Strong green pruning, conducted by Ismael Sanz (Wine maker Manager) help clusters to have good aeration and prevent powdery or downy mildew from spreading besides enhancing a good ripening.
Dominio de Atauta cellar counts with the advice of young oenologist Bertrand Sourdais. Bertrand was born in Loire region and trained in some of the best Bordeaux wineries such as Mouton Rothschild and Léoville Las Cases at the Médoc department; however this gifted Frenchman pursues the feminine side of Dominio de Atauta as if they were Burgundy wines. Oenologist in Chief Almudena Alberca recounts the wine making process from: dispatch at cellar, selection on vibrating table, smooth punching and ageing in French oak with a 50% of new wood. How do wines taste? Parada de Atauta is Atauta's benjamin, however it has pedigree. It is a creamy, sweet-toothed wine, with sugary tannins and roasted red pepper nuances. Dominio de Atauta is the covering letter of the winery, a blend of around 20 plots of different old vines; it is a tasty, energetic wine, with powerful tannins and smoked notes. Dominio de Atauta Valdegatiles comes from a tiny plot of 1,5 hectares of sandy soil; it is perhaps the cuvée where wood flavour is most present. Dominio de Atauta Llanos del Almendro: the great beast! It is the most complex wine of the whole collection, with unrivalled fruit explosion, grown in a 2,5 hectares pot of sandy-gravel soil. Dominio de Atauta La Roza, a singular wine not produced every harvest and, to end up, Dominio de Atauta La Mala, modesty and finesse token, excellent option if you enjoy wines with controlled strength.
