Description
Louis Latour does not produce this Côte de Nuits Villages to impress with oak or muscle, but to show what the Côte de Nuits is made of when it speaks in a hushed tone. The house, founded in 1797, sees Burgundy as a sum of nuances, not of effects, and here it brings together vineyards from Premeaux-Prissey, Comblanchien and Corgoloin, south of Nuits Saint Georges, as if seeking to distil the region’s most classic character into a single bottle. The Pinot Noir comes from vines around 30 years old, planted on clay and limestone, with loam and shaly clay that lend tension, fragrance and that earthy, somewhat austere undertone so characteristic of Burgundy. The east-facing slopes act as a small amphitheatre of morning light, providing just enough to allow the grapes to ripen without losing their vigour. The courage here lies in not overdoing it: letting the terroir speak for itself, unadorned.
Winemaking
Louis Latour Côte de Nuits Villages is born from a hand-harvest, the first act of precision. This is followed by traditional fermentation in open vats, with measured extraction and without seeking unnecessary density. Malolactic fermentation is carried out in full, refining the Pinot Noir’s acidity and rounding out the wine without detracting from its freshness. This is followed by ageing for 10 to 12 months in medium-toasted French oak barrels from the Louis Latour cooperage. Important: the oak does not dominate here; it breathes with the wine. There is no artificial embellishment, just refinement. The bottling preserves this concept of an honest Burgundy red: accessible when young, yet with sufficient structure to be laid down for a few years.
Taste
On the nose, Louis Latour Côte de Nuits Villages opens fresh and direct, with red cherry, raspberry and a note of crisp sour cherry. Nothing exuberant, nothing sweet. Everything points towards finesse. Beneath this lies cool earth, a limestone echo, a hint of clean undergrowth and a subtle spicy note from the ageing process. On the palate, it is round but not soft; silky but not light. The tannins are fine, almost velvety, and the red fruit returns with a clear, juicy quality. On the finish, cherry predominates, with freshness, delicacy and a quiet elegance. This is not a full-bodied Burgundy Pinot Noir, but one of rhythm, detail and pure Burgundian class.
