The Toro DO is located southeast of the city of Zamora, extending through this province (12 municipalities) and part of neighboring Valladolid (3 municipalities). This denomination of origin was granted in May 1933. In the 90s, the Junta de Castilla y León embarked on a plan of clonal selection and recovery of the region's native varieties, among them, the predominant variety Tinta de Oro. In the DO Toro we can find red, rosé and white wines.
Geographical and climatic characteristics of the Toro DO
The production area of Toro wines comprises 6000 hectares of extreme continental climate, with Atlantic influences and arid character. Winters are harsh with very low minimum temperatures, and summers are short and not too hot, with significant thermal contrasts.
As for rainfall levels, they are scarce and sunshine is very high. The soils in Toro are deep, loose, sometimes stony, of low fertility and soft topography.
The wines of Toro
Toro's wines were once powerful, alcoholic, acidic and full of color, but with time the elaborations are more and more careful. Here, the predominant variety is Tinta de Toro, a native grape from which aromatic wines with good structure are obtained. The DO Toro allows the use of 10% Garnacha in the vinifications.
As for the red wines of the DO Toro, they usually have between 13.5 degrees of alcohol, and are made mainly from the predominant native grape Tinta de Toro, which has a certification seal as a native variety, although also with Garnacha. Rosé wines, on the other hand, have between 11 and 14% alcohol content, and are made either from a blend between these two varieties, or from 100% Garnacha.
Finally, white wines have an alcohol content of between 11 and 13% and are made from Malvasia or the Verdejo grape variety.
