De la Riva is an old winery that after remaining inactive for a long time, has been recovered by Willy Pérez and Ramiro Ibáñez. Since 2017, the Manuel Antonio De la Riva brand, one of the most renowned in Spain, has returned to the market in search of recovering old vinifications and traditional vineyards.
In this new stage of the winery, the activities have been classified into two sections, one dedicated to the production of the wines and the other to the collection of the wines in stock.

Let's talk about its history

Ramiro Ibánez and Willy Pérez are two oenologists from the Marco de Jerez region who, despite being involved in several personal projects, have decided to join forces to resume the commercial activities of the Bodega M. Ant. De la Riva.
The winery bears the name of an old brand dedicated to producing outstanding sherries, but which, for various reasons, ceased operations until 2017, when Ibañez and Perez decided to take over the business again.
The story goes that Domecq, a former Spanish winemaking company that owned other famous wine brands, acquired the De La Riva brand, but after its dismemberment, it came under the control of the multinational Beam Global.
Then, Ramiro Ibánez and Willy Pérez managed to acquire the brand again, and decided to rescue the vineyards and old vinifications of traditional vineyards, and with this, to be able to promote this winery in the market again.
Since then, in addition to rescuing several collections of these wines, they have managed to incorporate some examples of manzanillas from representative vineyards of Sanlúcar de Barrameda.
The result of this history focuses on the return of very old examples and the integration of others, which complete a wide range of good wines.

Techniques used

We have already mentioned that this bodega has classified its operations into two systems, one dedicated to rescuing the winemaking process and the other to collecting wines from storage.
In the first one, they have resumed operations with a solera system that they expect to obtain the first examples in six years, making an initial release which is a white wine with grapes that come from El Notario.
This type of wine is made using an eight-hour sunlight technique, which gives the wine a density and structure that is very particular to Jerez whites, as they were made in the 1930s and 1940s.
Ramiro and Willy have focused on reviving the history of Jerez, applying traditional methods to the production of their wines, not only in the harvesting, fermentation and ageing phases, but also when bottling.
Within the De la Riva catalogue, they have a white table wine and a Fino from the Balbaina Alta estate, but they also have two "almacenista" wines that come in half-bottle presentation, for their exclusivity, and are identified by the name of Oloroso Viejísimo de Balbaina Baja and a Moscatel de Loma Baja.

Vineyards

The vineyards of the De La Riva winery are located at a distance of approximately 7 km from the Atlantic coast, and are composed of albariza soils, which determines the quality and the peculiar taste of the harvested fruit.
