Description
Louis Latour, a historic Burgundy maison founded in 1797, has crafted this Chassagne Montrachet Rouge with a very clear vision of what wine should be: allowing the terroir to take precedence over artificial intervention. In a commune renowned for its great white wines, crafting a red with ambition and precision almost seems like a statement of character. Here, there is no quest for easy impact, but rather a desire to champion the nobility of Pinot Noir in Chassagne Montrachet. Louis Latour Chassagne Montrachet Rouge comes from vines around 30 years old, planted on limestone and clay soils in the Côte de Beaune, a terroir where the limestone’s minerality provides tension and the clay lends body, depth and structure. The grapes are harvested by hand, with moderate yields, and everything points to a classic, understated and very Burgundian expression of the terroir. The grape variety is 100% Pinot Noir, and this varietal purity results in a wine with an elegant profile, yet with more structure than many would expect from the appellation.
Winemaking
The winemaking process for Louis Latour Chassagne Montrachet Rouge follows a traditional approach from grape reception through to bottling. Fermentation takes place in open vats, aiming for measured extraction that respects the natural delicacy of Pinot Noir. The wine is then aged for 10 to 12 months in French oak barrels from the Louis Latour cooperage, with 35 per cent new oak and medium toasting. This ageing process is not intended to dominate the wine as a whole, but rather to refine its texture, smooth out the tannins and add complexity without masking the vineyard’s identity.
Flavour
On the palate and nose, Louis Latour Chassagne Montrachet Rouge displays an elegant and serene profile. Red fruits emerge first, with hints of raspberry and blackberry, enveloped in a sensation of clean, precise fruit. The palate is silky, with polished tannins and a fine yet firm structure. This is not a fragile Pinot, but a full-bodied red wine with balance and length. The finish is long, fresh and harmonious, leaving an impression of ripe fruit, a velvety texture and classic refinement.
