Buy Wine from Philippe Brand
Domaine Brand & Fils is located in Ergersheim, a small town in the Alsace region of France. This charming village is located in the heart of the area known as La Couronne d'Or, a wine-growing area of great reputation. The winery was founded in 1956 by Lucien Brand, Philippe's grandfather, who started with a small estate of 0.53 hectares of vineyards and other plots dedicated to crops such as wheat and tobacco.
In 2006, Philippe Brand joined his father, bringing a new vision and renewed focus to the winery. Philippe, with a background that includes experiences in the Burgundy region and Australia, as well as collaborations with renowned Alsatian winemakers such as Christian Binner and Pierre Frick, helped to expand the range of natural and biodynamic wines. In 2015, the winery was certified biodynamic by the Demeter organisation, marking a new stage in its commitment to sustainability and respect for nature.
Vineyards
Philippe Brand' s vineyard extends over 15 hectares, characterised by a great diversity of soils. In the Alsace region, the soils are a mixture of clay, limestone and sandstone, which allows the vines to be deeply nourished, providing wines with an authentic expression of terroir. In addition, the varied topography and different microclimates within the Ergersheim region allow a wide diversity of grape varieties to be grown, adapted to the specific conditions of each plot.
The climate of Alsace is semi-continental, with warm summers and cold winters. This contrast allows the grapes to ripen slowly and over a long period of time, which contributes to the aromatic complexity and balanced acidity of the wines. Philippe Brand' s vineyards also benefit from the influence of dry winds that help prevent vine diseases and facilitate organic farming.
Philosophy
The philosophy of Philippe Brand and his winery focuses on making wines that respect nature, terroir and family traditions as much as possible, but with a clear innovative vision. The winemaking methods at Domaine Brand & Fils are based on biodynamic agriculture, which treats the vineyard as a living organism. For Philippe, the soil is the heart of the vineyard, and his focus is on maintaining the natural balance of micro-organisms, roots and animals that interact within this ecosystem.
Manual labour is one of the pillars of his viticulture. The vines are cultivated and tended in a traditional way, with manual tillage to avoid excessive use of machinery and chemicals. They also use natural fertilisers such as nettle manure and horsetail infusion, which strengthen the plants against external diseases. Preventive treatments such as the copper-based Bordeaux mixture are used in a very controlled manner to minimise the impact on the environment.
In the winery, vinification is carried out with a minimal intervention approach. Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts is prioritised, ensuring that the wines reflect the personality of the vineyard and the characteristics of the vintage. Philippe Brand uses no filtration or fining, and follows the strict standards of Vin Naturel and S.A.I.N.S. certification (no additives or added sulphites).
One of the particularities of the winery is its production of long maceration wines, known as orange wines. These wines are made by leaving the skins of the white grapes in contact with the must for an extended period of time, which gives them a unique tannic structure and colour, as well as very distinctive aromas and flavours. This style of wine, although rare in Alsace, is an example of Philippe Brand' s innovative approach and his ability to blend tradition and innovation.
The end result is what the winery calls living wines, wines that retain all the life and energy of the vineyard, transmitting it to the consumer through each bottle. The winery has also expanded its range to include natural sparkling wines and wines aged in amphorae, experimenting with new winemaking techniques that always respect the natural essence of the grape and the vineyard.
In short, Philippe Brand has positioned itself as a benchmark for sustainable viticulture and innovation in Alsace, combining a deep respect for the land with a contemporary and experimental approach to winemaking. Drawing on his rich family heritage and international experience, Philippe Brand has taken the winery to new horizons, where quality, authenticity and respect for nature are the cornerstones of his work.
