Buy Wine from Bodegas La Tapada
In 1985, the Guitián brothers, led by Ramón, took a visionary decision: to replant their family estate in Rubiá de Valdeorras exclusively with Godello, a native variety that was then almost forgotten. This brave gesture laid the foundations for a winery that today represents the essence of their land. The project took root on a 10-hectare vineyard within a 12-hectare estate, flanked by a forest of hundred-year-old chestnut trees, silent guardians of the family history.
Terroir in Altura and in Poetry
A Tapada is located at an altitude of 500 metres, on a south-facing slope that catches the right amount of light from the Galician sun and is protected from the cold winds. The Atlantic climate with continental overtones and the deep, well-drained Ordovician slate soils create an ideal environment for the Godello to express itself with intensity, balance and a marked aromatic personality.
The vineyard, planted in 1985 with a pre-phylloxera clone, follows a high density model (more than 3,100 vines per hectare) and double Guyot pruning. Sustainable viticulture is practised, without herbicides, with organic fertilisers only when necessary, and pest control based on copper and sulphur. The natural, well-ventilated environment helps to prevent diseases, favouring minimal intervention agriculture.
A winery born from the vineyard
In the 1990s, a winery was built to work exclusively with grapes from the A Tapada estate. Designed by Ramón Guitián and the oenologists Pepe Hidalgo and Ana Martín, the installation responds to a clear idea: to vinify with coherence and fidelity to the vineyard of origin.
Pioneers in Spain in the use of lees without the intervention of wood and in acacia barrels, A Tapada has always been committed to discreet innovation, without fanfare. It has also demonstrated that Godello can age elegantly, developing bottle-ageing periods of up to 50 months, revealing layers of complexity and freshness in equal measure.
International recognition
In 1996, the first Barrel Fermented Guitián, born from the exceptional 1995 vintage, was awarded a prize at the Challenge International du Vin in Bordeaux, among more than 4,800 wines. It was a milestone that put the winery on the international map. Since then, María Carmen in the administration and Senén in the vineyard, together with Hidalgo and Martín on the technical side, have maintained this level of excellence.
Each Guitián bottle reflects the landscape, the history and the terroir of its origin. Without following faddish trends, every step of the process - from manual harvesting in crates to controlled fermentation - is guided by the desire to authentically express the character of the vineyard.
A Tapada wines need no fuss: they enter smoothly, but their complexity, aromatic richness and structure unfold elegantly. Each sip is an experience that conveys confidence, humility and a well-defined identity.
