Pingus? That's it! Pingus is Peter Sisseck's nickname. Born in 1962 in Netherlands, at the early age of 15 Peter started showing great interest in the wine world during his visits to his uncle Peter Vinding Diers, who turned around Bordeaux white wines… There, with his wine godfather, the basis of what would become the Spanish wine black beast years later was set: the Zeus of wine!
Over the years Peter Sisseck gradually gained multiple wine experiences on his trips to California, South Africa and Burgundy amongst others, but it wasn't until 1990 when, for unknown reasons, Peter arrived to Spain, disembarking in Catalonia. His grandparents had a house in Begur (Costa Brava) and Peter enjoyed windy summers and outings to the Empordà appellation vineyards. Those days however, Empordà wine area was quite unknown; there was plenty of work to be done. It was then when Peter Sisseck joined Clos d'Agon as oenologist and consultant and in a few years the wine scene of the region was transformed: Peter is the first oenologist in Spain to produce white wine with Roussanne, Marsanne and Viogner varieties.
Years later, Peter Sisseck moved to Ribera del Duero and started working at Hacienda Monasterio, Pesquera del Duero, as consultant; it is then when Peter discovers the biodiversity that Ribera region land offers and embarks on his adventure to search what in the years to come would be Dominio de Pingus.
Thus, in 1995 Peter creates and launches his first harvest at Dominio de Pingus. The winery has 5 hectares of old Tinto Fino vines at Quintanilla de Onésimo village, a small town where former Spanish president José María Aznar spends his weekends. Peter Sisseck philosophy is to let the terroir express every harvest so the cellar interventions are only the minimum extent necessary. Once the harvest is received, clusters are manually de-stemmed and grapes are trod by foot in open wood vats.
Dominio de Pingus produce only three wines: Pingus which was the first Spanish wine best rated by Robert Parker together with Thermanthia, Clos Erasmus, Contador and Viña El Pisón. Pingus yields only 8.000 bottles of biodynamic wine, with low performance, manually de-stemmed, aged in French oak barrels for 24 months without racking or filtering. Flor de Pingus is Pingus “small brother”, a wine where black fruit liqueur is the prevailing note, with a savoury taste in mouth and firm and enveloping tannin. A great wine with an overwhelming quality-pleasure relationship! Finally PSI is the anti-crisis wine by Dominio de Pingus. For the time being grapes are purchased to Peter Sisseck reliable wine growers and wine is fermented in cement tanks so its temperature is less fluctuating over time. Petrus is also performing like this. The resulting wine has finesse, freshness and elegance even though you might notice some starting reduction (just give it some time in the glass!).
