The Belondrade winery is located in the municipality of La Seca, in the Rueda region of Spain.
Founded in 1994 by Frenchman Didier Belondrade, the winery was born out of Didier's dream to create a high quality white wine in a country traditionally known for its reds. Inspired by the stony soils of Rueda that reminded him of those of the Rhone, and in love with the indigenous Verdejo grape variety, Didier decided to establish his project in this region.The first vintage of Belondrade and Lurton was released in 1996, quickly gaining recognition for its elegance and complexity. In 2000, the winery moved to a new building in La Seca, designed by architect Vicent Dufos du Rau, reflecting the winery's ambition and commitment to quality. Over the years, Didier Belondrade has continued to expand his vision, acquiring new plots of land and establishing the Belondrade Art and Wine Foundation in 2015 to promote the connection between art and wine.
Vineyards
The Belondrade winery has 40 hectares of its own vineyards, divided into 23 plots located at an altitude of around 750 metres, close to the Douro River. The climate is continental, characterised by long, cold winters and short, hot summers, with a low annual rainfall of between 300 and 350 mm. This extreme climate, together with the wide temperature range between day and night, contributes to the quality of the grapes.
The terroir of Belondrade is diverse, with soils mainly of Cenozoic origin composed of a layer of boulders 10 to 60 cm thick, clay subsoil and a deep layer of limestone. The combination of these elements, together with the orientation, the age of the vines, the rootstock and the clones, gives rise to musts with a unique personality and style. Planting density varies between 1,100 and 3,300 plants per hectare, with an average yield of 30 to 35 hectolitres per hectare.

Belondrade' s philosophy is based on making wines that reflect the authenticity and purity of the terroir. Since its beginnings, the winery has practised sustainable and organic viticulture, avoiding the use of herbicides and pesticides to encourage biodiversity in the vineyard. Work in the vineyard is carried out meticulously and at the right time to maximise the quality of the grapes.
In winemaking, Belondrade stands out for its pioneering use of fermentation and ageing in French oak barrels. The first vintage of Belondrade and Lurton in 1996 was fermented in barrel, and since then, the winery has continued to perfect this technique. Today, they use 300-litre barrels, allowing for a subtle contribution of oak that does not mask the freshness and complexity of the Verdejo. Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts is another key aspect of their approach, always seeking the most natural and authentic expression of the wine.
Belondrade and Lurton wine is aged for almost a year in barrel and six months in bottle before release. This care in winemaking and ageing ensures that the wine has the capacity to evolve and improve over time, as demonstrated by the vertical tastings carried out by the winery.
