History of the winery
In 2001, after the death of their father, Manel Avinyó, a winegrower with a long family history, and his brother Joan took over the family estate and decided to start making their own still and sparkling wines at the Clos Lentiscus winery.
They began to replant the uncultivated vines and the Avinyó family winery was recovered and the winery was renamed Clos Lentiscus by Manel.
Location of the winery
The estate is located in the Garraf Natural Park, 50 km from Barcelona (Catalonia). This is where Manel recovers the native varieties of the area with the utmost respect for nature, resulting in his unbeatable wines.
Application of biodynamic techniques
The vines are planted in sandy and calcareous soils and the principles of biodynamic viticulture are followed. This winery has tried to capture the essence of the terroir in the wines it produces.
The entire structure is organised according to the principles of biodynamics. Since 2010, the winery has been making natural wines, without bleaching, without filtration, without added sulphites and using indigenous yeasts in the fermentation process.
Vineyards
The vineyards of this winery are located in the Garraf Natural Park, which guarantees organic farming and a good conservation of the environment.
These vineyards are located at an altitude of 225 m above sea level with a sandy calcareous soil. They grow native grape varieties such as Malvasía de Sitges, Xarel.lo, Sumoll, Parellada, Cartoixà Vermell, Moscatel de Alejandría, Cariñena and Ull de llebre.
The vines are old, almost centenary, and no synthetic additives are used in the vineyard, and the planting, pruning, uprooting and harvesting are dictated by the lunar phases. Pollination is facilitated by the presence of beehives and the sheep contribute to the fertilisation and control of the vegetation cover, while a white horse called Ringo does the tilling.
All the wines of the traditional method are aged in oak barrels and a minimum of 20 months in the bottle. The cavas are lush, but never have more than two grams of residual sugar per litre.
These are wines to share
The aim of the winery is to make wines as they were made in the old days, respecting the land, using classic methods without pesticides or herbicides and using the moon as a guide for planting, pruning and harvesting, as well as respecting the wine in the bottling process.
The estate produces still, red, white and rosé wines. These wines are characterised by their elegance, purity and minerality.
The wines of this winery are perfect to enjoy, to share with friends and although the standard bottle is 0.75 centilitres and is the most used, some winemakers among them Manel Avinyó owner of this winery are starting to use other less restrictive formats that reflect what is inside the bottle.
