The Comando G winery is located in a stunning natural setting, just a short drive from Madrid, in the rugged and eroded peaks of the Sierra de Gredos. This region, known for its alpine landscape, meadows, scattered rocks and thick scrubland, is home to several Denominations of Origin, including Méntrida and Vinos de Madrid, famous for their simple, inexpensive wines. However, Comando G stands out for its focus on quality and uniqueness.

The story of Comando G begins with two friends and colleagues, Daniel Landi and Fernando García. Both worked in the Sierra de Gredos area: Daniel at the family winery Bodegas Jiménez-Landi and Fernando at Bodega Marañones. Attracted by the mountains and the rumours of small, almost inaccessible vineyard plots high in the Sierra de Gredos, they started buying and leasing the best sites they could find, creating their own project, Comando G, in 2008. With their work, Daniel and Fernando are redefining Garnacha, a variety traditionally considered a workhorse, into something that can rival the elegance and finesse of Pinot in Burgundy or Syrah in the northern Rhône.

Vineyards

Comando G's vineyards, managed under biodynamic practices, are composed of vines ranging in age from 50 to 80 years old, planted on sandy soils derived from granite, slate and quartz. The combination of high altitude, free draining soils and a mild, fairly humid microclimate for central Spain, guarantees a long growing season and a moderate level of alcohol in the finished wines. The resulting wines are surprisingly pale, extraordinarily aromatic and intensely flavoursome. Each site is hand-harvested and spontaneously fermented in open French oak barrels, then aged in concrete, foudre, demi-muids or amphorae.

Philosophy

Comando G's philosophy is deeply Burgundian, with France as a model in terms of the conception of the terroir and the search for minerality in the wines. They focus on making wines that reflect the region, the villages and the specific crus. In their winemaking process, they try to intervene as little as possible, using stemming and extremely gentle extractions. They are committed to ageing on the lees in large barrels or foudres. This philosophy is reflected in their wines, which are a singular and unique expression of Garnacha de Gredos, marked by a vitality and vibrancy that combines the finesse of the best Beaujolais crus with the tireless complexity of Château Rayas.
