Buy Wine from Ampeleia
The Ampeleia winery is located in the Alta Maremma region of Tuscany, a place where the Tuscan hills meet the sea, offering high and low landscapes, chestnut forests and sea views. This winery is close to medieval villages such as Roccatederighi and the National Park of the Colline Metallifere, a UNESCO Geopark. Roccatederighi, in particular, is a charming and unique village that towers above the winery, built on a spur of volcanic trachytic rock, offering breathtaking views over the Maremma Grosseto and beyond.
Today's vigneron Marco Tait, who has taken over the reins of the business, began his life in Trentino, following in the footsteps of his father, a sensitive farmer. He studied viticulture and oenology and began his career at Elisabetta Foradori's estate. After venturing into other experiences, he accepted Elisabetta's invitation to join Ampeleia, where he has been for almost twenty years. Over the years, he has maintained his desire to explore, making working trips to places such as Argentina or Bordeaux.
Vineyards
Ampeleia, located in the majestic Alta Maremma region of Tuscany, extends over 35 hectares of vineyards divided into four main units, strategically located at different altitudes ranging from 250 to 550 metres above sea level. This layout allows the vineyards to benefit from both the maritime, Mediterranean climate and the cooler, more continental climate of the region. All these vineyards are located in the Colline Metallifere Geopark, recognised by UNESCO for its exceptional geological interest. The La Rocca vineyard, at an altitude of 500 metres, is the largest and is composed mainly of Cabernet Franc, while Sassoforte, at 300 metres, stands out for its rich soil composition of rhyolite and grey clays. La Pieve, also at 300 metres, is known for its cultivation of Alicante Nero, a variety native to Maremma. Finally, Meleta, closer to the traditional Maremma and 200 metres above sea level, shows the influence of the sea in its soils rich in limestone deposits and marine fossils. In these vineyards, Cabernet Franc is king, reflecting the uniqueness and contrasts of the territory in every bottle produced by Ampeleia.
Philosophy
Since its foundation, Ampeleia has followed a philosophy of respect for the land and nature. Although not initially biodynamic, the magic of the territory led the winery to first adopt organic practices and then to the progressive conversion to biodynamic agriculture. At Ampeleia, they produce all their compost and spray preparations. In 2014, they introduced five cows to the estate, which graze freely in their vineyards, producing the manure used for their biodynamic 500 preparation. The winery sees biodynamics as a way of being for those who farm the land and the territory, with a moral obligation to leave the land in better condition than they found it.
With this rich history, philosophy and dedication to the art of winemaking, Ampeleia has established itself as a leading winery in the Tuscany region, producing wines that reflect the essence and character of the territory in which they are grown.
