Since 1998, winemaker Matthieu Barret, from the Domaine du Coulet winery, has had the ambition of creating wines with an identity that express the unique flavour of the place where they are born.
Location of the winery
Matthieu Barret has had his winery since 1998 in Cornas, in the northern Rhône Valley in France, south of Lyon, where the Syrah grape reigns supreme.
History
Matthieu Barret was born in Aix-en-Provence in 1975 and studied viticulture in Beaune and joined his grandfather in Cornas in 1997. He belongs to the seventh generation of a family of winegrowers.
Domaine du Coulet was founded by Matthieu Barret's grandfather after the Second World War and over the years has supplied grapes to some of the best known producers in the Northern Rhône.
After inheriting some plots from his grandfather, who used to sell grapes to the local cooperative, Matthieu built his own Domaine du Coulet in Cornas and started to work the vineyards organically obtaining his first harvest in 2000.
Vineyards
The vineyards of the winegrower Matthieu Barret are located in the renowned terroir of Cornas, north of Valence, in the Rhône on slopes with very degraded granitic soils.
The Domaine du Coulet winery currently owns 18 hectares planted with Syrah and other varieties, from which Matthieu makes his renowned wines.
The vineyards are planted on steep south/south-east facing terraces that are carved into the granite rock characteristic of Cornas. The composition of the soils leads to small yields and results in concentrated and powerful wines.
The vines have an average age of 40 to 55 years and are certified both organic and biodynamic.
Use of biodynamic viticulture techniques
In 2000, from the first harvest onwards, Matthieu worked mainly in the vineyard, applying organic viticulture.
From the beginning, he employed organic and natural practices and in 2002 he received his biodynamic certification.
In 2012, Matthieu replaced the vineyard machinery with mules, horses and labour and started to create green spaces around the vineyards to foster a healthy environment for wildlife.
With biodynamic viticulture, no additives are used, there is no fining or filtration, resulting in an extraordinary quality of wines that are a true expression of the character of the land where they were born.
Wines
The Domaine Du Coulet winery offers a variety of organic and biodynamic wines made without oenological additives, except for a minimum amount of sulphur during bottling.
Matthieu's wines are all about purity of fruit, a distinctive minerality and a pronounced expression of terroir.
Matthieu offers serious and intense wines, his style of wine could be described as very generous, interesting and frank - one of the best expressions of the Rhône!
He also has a constant focus on innovation and minimal intervention in the cellar. The grapes are harvested by hand and enter the gravity-fed cellar, where they are destemmed but not crushed.
In 2006, he decided to radically change his winemaking process by using fewer barrels and replacing them with concrete eggs. Its continuous evolution and search for purity and expression continue to dominate its production processes.
His philosophy is that any winemaking cannot create what can be obtained naturally. Their oenology is "flexible" to let the wine do what it wants and express its land and its vintage".
