Buy Wine from Champagne Delamotte
Maison Delamotte has 250 years of history behind, and is one of the five oldest wineries in the whole Champagne region. It was founded in Reims in 1760 by vigneron François Delamotte.
Alexandre Delamotte moved the winery to a beautiful mansion at the end of the 18th century. In 1818 Nicolas Lous Delamotte, Alexandre's brother, took over the winery and in 1830 it was sold to another producer: Lanson. Afterwards the company was purchased by Marie Louise de Nonancourt, who delegates the winery's management in her son, Charles de Nonancourt; from that very moment quality takes priority over any other element, performance is restricted and harvests are to be kept in the cellar for at least three years.
However, the turning point would arrive in 1988 when Delamotte merged with one of the top Champagne referents: Champagne Salon. Nowadays headquarters is located in Mesnil-sur-Oger, and the current manager is Didier Depond.
The production team is incredibly small, only 10 people, if we consider their annual production of 750.000 bottles. Michel Fauconnet is in charge of the cellar, being oenologist chief at Laurent-Perrier, the mother company.
As far as grape varieties used for their champagne production are concerned, Chardonnay from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger has special relevance, supplemented with other Chardonnay from Avize, Oger and Cramant. Pinot Noir selection is not trivial either, and it is supplied from Reims Mountain: Bouzy, Ambonnay and Tours-sur-Marne. Pinot Noir variety is used in Delamotte Brut and Delamotte Rosé cuvées.
Preparation principles seem clear and common but we must not forget them: hard work at the vineyards, from pruning to harvest, long laying period in the cellar before being distributed in the market and everything to enjoy Champagne as what it is, a high quality, delightful wine, whose identity features are a wide range of scents and styles.
One of their most emblematic champagnes is Blanc de Blancs with 100% Chardonnay grapes from Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger, Avize and Cramant. It is aged in bottle for 4 to 5 years before its disgorging to provide personality, sophistication and the minimum time to start enjoying it. At the top of their production and due to a difficult harvest in Champagne, the maison presents us with the Brut Collection 1991 where they confirm there are not good and bad years but savoir-faire enough to endure them.
