Buy Wine from Castell del Remei
Castell del Remei is one of the great Spanish benchmarks with whom many of people have entered the world of wine when this passion was not so widespread and there were only few producing wineries. On the road from Tàrrega to Balaguer, at the Ponent plains of Lleida, we find Castell del Remei estate, founded back in 1780 by the Girona family. It was Ignasi Girona Vilanova who, after finishing his Engineering studies in Paris and wine making training in Bordeaux, and returned to Castell del Remei to manage the propriety and contribute with his wine knowledge following the French wine concept. Thus, it was one of the first wineries, together with Jean Leon and Miguel Torres who planted foreign grape varieties from France such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Sémillon Blanc.
In 1982 Cusiné family purchased Castell del Remei estate, however, there was no change in reference to the wine making philosophy; regardless of managing changes the winery has always been committed to coupage wine producing at the expense of single variety ones. Question of trends?
The castle is surrounded by 400 hectares, in a typical Bordeaux château style concept. Today, only 140 hectares are cultivated with Tempranillo, Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Macabeo varieties to produce a total of 800.000 bottles of reliable and honest quality. All the wines are produced under the designation of origin Costers del Segre.
These are dry land, calcareous soils but Segre river allows vineyard cultivation using automatic drip irrigation system (traditionally used in this area for cereal growing). Climate is continental-mediterranean and grapevines are placed at 250 metres above sea level. Costers del Segre appellation encompasses 4,600 hectares and seven production sub-zones.
Which ones does Castell del Remei produce? Castell del Remei La Cuvée Brut Nature is a fresh and cheerful cava; Castell del Remei Blanc Planell is a young and affordable white wine with mango cream as prevailing flavour; on the other hand, Castell del Remei Oda Blanc is a more powerful, unctuous wine with wood smoked aroma; Castell del Remei Gotim Bru is a wild card wine, suitable for all palates; Castell del Remei Oda on its part brings together aged wine features such as leather, vanilla, coffee and lactic notes. Finally, Castell del Remei 1780 is a powerful wine lavishing with Cabernet Sauvignon tannins as well as herbaceous and red pepper notes.
