Buy Wine from La Gutina
La Gutina is much more than a natural winery: it is a philosophy of life. It all began many years ago, when the great-grandfather of Joan Carles, the current owner, bought the land and the farmhouse located in the Els Aspres area of the Albera mountain range, near a stream, just 2.5 kilometres from the village of Sant Climent Sescebes, Girona (Spain). At that time, the vineyards had been attacked by the phylloxera plague, so there were only fields and olive groves.
Vineyard of La Gutina
The estate is situated between 90 and 100 metres above sea level. The perfect blend of olive groves, vineyards, dolmens and mountains coexists in harmony. His father, Lluís Torres, had the great idea of returning to making wine in the old cellar of the farmhouse. This is how he planted 15 hectares of Grenache vines. This wine was made using traditional methods and sold in bulk at his family home in Figueres. Eventually, they decided to stop making it and sold all the grapes to a large producer. In 2006, Joan Carles and Barbara inherited the estate and decided to settle there. The aim was to revalue it, to give it a new life, to reinvent themselves. After all, its environmental, landscape and historical heritage is a diamond in the rough. Reclaiming the land. Currently, eight hectares of vineyards are cultivated, three of them planted between 1953 and 1968. They have the special Mediterranean microclimate, but with the addition of the tramontana, the characteristic wind of the area. The soil is granite sand (jabre), with occasional quartz slate. All the plots are unirrigated and the soil is fertilised organically. They use Bordeaux broth and sulphur powder, which they use homeopathically to combat pests.
If there is one thing that sets La Gutina apart from the rest, it is their ability to do everything themselves. In addition to the fact that all the vineyard work is done by hand, they only use their own vines for their wines, and do not have the help of field technicians or oenologists. Everything starts and ends at home.
Wines of La Gutina
Some are powerful and structured, others are fragrant, light and fruity. Their natural wines do not contain added sulphites, nor are they filtered or clarified. They are made without any kind of intervention during the fermentation process - spontaneous, with autochthonous yeasts - and ageing.
