Buy Wine from Domaine Jean Marie Berrux
Jean Marie Berrux is a French oenologist graduated from the University of Beaune, who was born in Savoie, a French department belonging to the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The Domaine Jean Marie Berrux winery is located in Mersault and produces some of the most renowned biodynamic wines in the area.
Publicist and oenologist
It may not be very common, but Jean-Marie Berrux studied advertising, which is why he moved to work in Paris for several years, but later left the city to study oenology at the University of Beaune, where he graduated.
He was inspired mainly by having spent his childhood in Savoy where his uncle was an oenologist, and many of his friends from his youth were also oenologists.
The "stubborn one" sets his dream in motion
The first vintage of the Domaine Jean Marie Berrux winery was called "Petit tetu", which is a reflection of his vision of himself and all the effort he invested to reach this achievement.
The reason for being so stubborn is that in order to pursue his passion for viticulture, Jean Marie practically abandoned his studies, his life and his work in Paris. Clearly this decision was the right one, and the passion for what he does can be perceived in the wines produced in the winery that he has managed to build with so much effort.
The beginnings of the Domaine Jean Marie Berrux winery
As a recent graduate, Jean Marie was able to gain some experience working for other winemakers. In 2004, Jean Marie and his wife bought their first plot of land in Puligny-Montrachet. Chardonnay vines were grown there. Shortly afterwards they built their house in Mersault and then their winery. This plot has about 1.5 hectares of old Chardonnay vines and is located in Mersault.
Naturally produced wines
In addition to the knowledge he acquired during his university studies and the experience he had with his uncle, Jean Marie's winemaking friends helped him to produce his wines in a natural way, with minimal intervention in the vineyard and in the cellar.
For this he had to learn everything he needed to know about biodynamic practices, until he became the expert he is today. The vineyards are cultivated on a clay soil, which is located at the base of Puligny-Montrachet.
The vines are cultivated biodynamically, while the grapes are harvested by hand quite early. In the cellar, the process is very meticulous, and only indigenous yeasts are used for the rather slow fermentation.
The wines are aged on fine lees in old oak barrels. At bottling, a minimum of sulphites is applied, with no other chemical additives.
Organic, fresh and mineral wines
As a result of all this careful and painstaking process, the Domaine Jean-Marie winery manages to produce natural, fresh and mineral wines, whose smell and bouquet reflect in detail the effort of the work carried out, as well as the quality of the grapes cultivated and used to make each wine.
Their wines are renowned for their great character, and because they are intense and vibrant wines that do not leave those who have the pleasure of tasting them indifferent.
A small but pleasing production
Due to the effort that Jean Marie puts into making the wines in his cellar, as well as the time and care he invests, the production in his cellar is not massive, which means that the production is small but indulgent, offering a higher quality in each bottle that leaves each person who tastes them pleased and satisfied. Currently Jean Marie is also a partner in the Burgundy Negociant Sarnin-Berrux.
