The Christian Tschida winery is located in Illmitz, Burgenland, Austria. The Tschidas have been making wine in Illmitz since the 19th century, and Christian still farms some of these old family vineyards. Christian is known to be one of the most meticulous winemakers, obsessed with how every detail in the vineyard or in the cellar can impact the quality of his wines. When Christian took the reins of the family winery in 2003, most customers were reluctant to follow his vision of elegant, low-alcohol red wines.

The winery has 14 hectares of its own vineyards. These vineyards are managed in a certified organic manner, and some biodynamic practices are used. The main varieties grown include Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Blaufränkisch, Syrah and Cabernet Franc. Some of their vineyards are planted in doppel-stock, a double-planting system that pushes the roots to compete and search deeper for nutrition and water.
Philosophy
Christian Tschida 's philosophy focuses on attention to detail and respect for nature. He spares no expense when it comes to caring for his vineyards, using techniques such as covering the vines with straw to protect them from the summer drought and avoid "stressed" aromas in the wine. In addition, instead of cutting the shoots off the vines, he ties them up, as he believes that each cut only encourages further growth. He also uses natural herbal teas and his own compost to protect and nourish the plants.
Christian Tschida describes himself as a "transformer", not a wine maker. He prides himself on extremely gentle pressing, using a high-quality Bucher-Vaslin basket press and a pneumatic press custom-made for him in Germany. Both exert the "pressure of a handshake" and produce only the best juice. The wines ferment spontaneously and then rest undisturbed in large custom-made vats made by Stockinger, a renowned Austrian cooper. No racking takes place, as Christian believes that every racking takes energy and freshness away from the wine. Since 2013, the wines have been made completely without any sulphur. Christian considers this issue to be much less important than it used to be. Purity is, in fact, the cornerstone of Tschida's efforts.
