Buy Wine from Familia Nin Ortiz
The winery Familia Nin-Ortiz is formed by Ester Nin and Carles Ortiz, two people in love with Priorat and biodynamic agriculture.
This young Catalan winery is located in Porrera, in the southwest of Priorat, about 130 km from Barcelona.
Its current history
In 2002, Ester Nin decided to found, together with her partner Carles Ortiz, the winery that today produces three magnificent wines: Selma de Nin, Planetas de Nin and Nit de Nin.
Ester Nin, a biologist and qualified oenologist, and Carles Ortiz, an oenologist from Barcelona, married in 2008, merging their respective vineyards.
Since 2006, they began to apply biodynamic viticulture techniques in the Priorat region. The couple is dedicated to growing grapes close to nature and in an environmentally friendly way - they are pioneers in the area!
Their philosophy is to make wines that express the characteristics of the land and the climate, with the utmost respect for the vineyard and its surroundings. That is why they cultivate all their vineyards with ecological techniques under the parameters of biodynamics.
For some time now, the winery has belonged to Eric Solomon's Hong Kong dollarpean Cellars group, which was nominated in 2002 by the Parker guide as "the wine personality of the year". This has allowed the very specific wines of the Nin-Ortiz family to reach more Priorat enthusiasts.
Their vineyards
Ester Nin and Carles Ortiz are well known in the wine world for the care they take of their vineyards. They currently own 18 hectares of the Les Planetes estate located between 400 and 650 metres above sea level; the estate is one of the highest in Priorat.
The Priorat is always present in their wines. Their vineyards are located on relatively wild north-facing slopes and on the famous 'Llicorella' (black schist) soil, where their oldest vines are 110 years old. All this makes for truly unique wines!
The variety of grapes they make their wines from includes Garnacha Negra, Garnacha Peluda, Carignan, Carignan Blanca, Roussanne, Marsanne, Chenin Blanc and Parellada Montonegra.
Use of biodynamic viticulture techniques
The winery uses biodynamic viticulture techniques that respect the environment. These techniques include: ploughing with mules, early harvests to preserve freshness, manual selection of grapes and application of horsetail extract herbal teas.
Fermentation and ageing take 16 to 18 months. It also takes place in French oak barrels between 28 and 32 litres. Since 2012 it is also fermented in terracotta amphorae to avoid the presence of wood. Likewise, no industrial yeast is added, no acidification is carried out and almost no sulphur is added.
Ester Nin and Carles Ortiz treat their vineyards with professionalism, respect and dedication, practising organic farming according to biodynamic parameters. They are convinced that this is the only way to allow the plant to achieve its most authentic expression; you only have to taste some of their wines to be convinced that they are unique and extraordinary!
