The Denomination of Origin Utiel-Requena is a region located in the interior of the province of Valencia, mainly dedicated to the production of red wines. This region includes 95 wineries, hosts 5,604 wine growers and covers nine municipalities: Caudete de las Fuentes, Camporrobles, Fuenterrobles, Requena, Siete Aguas, Sinarcas, Utiel, Venta del Moro and Villargordo del Cabriel.
The winemaking tradition of this DO dates back more than 2,500 years, as evidenced by archaeological findings in the area. However, it was not until the 19th century, with the inauguration of the Valencia-Utiel railroad line in 1887, that viticulture experienced a major boom and winery districts were formed. Today, wine is the main economic engine of the region, providing a livelihood for some seven thousand families in the area.
Climatic and geographical characteristics of the D.O. Utiel-Requena
As for the geographical and climatic qualities, as it is located about 70 km from the sea and with an altitude of between 600 and 900 meters, the land and climate of this small plateau of more than 1,800 km2 has Mediterranean features combined with continental influences.
Winters are characterized by long and cold, while in spring there are some night frosts. For its part, both summer and autumn are usually quite short.
Its temperatures are conducive to the proper cultivation of the vine, since the strong thermal oscillations give the wines acidity and greater polyphenolic concentration in the case of red wines.
In addition, the low amount of rain facilitates the ripening of the grapes and reduces the risk of fungus or other diseases caused by parasites in the plants.
Wines from the D.O. Utiel-Requena
There are several types of wines that can be found in this region:
- Superior: White, rosé or red wines made with at least 85% of the preferred varieties of the area, with or without oak barrels. Their name is due to the fact that they have superior organoleptic qualities, according to the stipulated requirements.
- Initial harvest: White, rosé and red wines, made from grapes harvested within the first ten days of the harvest. Their youth gives them special attributes, among them, a slight release of carbon dioxide gas.
- Bobal with specific mention: Rosé and red single-varietal wines from Bobal. It can be "crianza", "reserva", "gran reserva", "superior", "initial harvest", "matured in barrel".
- Matured or matured in barrel: Wines with a passage or stay in oak or cone barrels, for a time not exceeding six months.
- Aging: Wines that, in the case of red wines, have a minimum aging period of 24 months, of which they must remain at least six months in oak barrels, and in the case of white and rosé wines, they must have a minimum aging period of 18 months, of which they must remain at least six months in oak barrels of the same maximum capacity.
- Reserva: Red wines with a minimum aging period of 36 months, of which they must remain at least 12 months in oak barrels and in bottle for the rest of this period. And in the case of white and rosé wines, they must have a minimum aging period of 24 months, of which they must remain at least six months in oak barrels of the same maximum capacity and in bottle the rest of this period.
- Gran Reserva: Red wines with a minimum aging period of 60 months, of which 18 will have remained in oak barrels, and in bottle the rest of this period. In the case of white and rosé wines, they must have a minimum ageing period of 48 months, of which at least six months must have been in oak barrels of the same maximum capacity and in bottle for the rest of this period.
- Bobal high expression: Monovarietal wines from Bobal, with or without aging.

Red Varieties
The D.O.P. Utiel-Requena is mainly a region of red wines, since 87% of the surface of the vineyard is destined to the cultivation of red varieties. The most outstanding variety is Bobal, since it represents 70% of the production, besides being the second most extended cultivation in the country after Tempranillo.The Bobal is a native variety, which adapts perfectly to the climatic and geographical conditions of the area, as it prefers highlands, short and dry summers, and is very resistant.
This variety of grape offers wines of intense color, with a lot of body and complex flavors. It is also used to make red wines with carbonic maceration, as well as very fruity rosés.
In addition to the Bobal variety, this D.O. also authorizes the cultivation of other red grape varieties, such as Tempranillo, Garnacha Tinta, Garnacha Tintorera, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Petit verdot and Cabernet Franc
White varieties
White varieties represent only 13% of the vineyard of this Denomination of Origin. The Tardana (or Planta Nova) is a native variety of this PDO. This type of grape is characterized by its late ripening, and by offering fresh, balanced and structured wines, with colors with soft golden tones, aromatic and fruity.On the other hand, the Macabeo variety gives white wines with a greener straw color, intense and fruity aroma. The Merseguera is only planted in the highest lands of the area.
Other authorized white grape varieties are: Merseguera, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Parellada, Verdejo and small grain Moscatel.
