Description
Louis Latour, founded in 1797, produces this Louis Latour Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Crots with absolute fidelity to the character of Burgundy. The wine originates in Nuits Saint Georges, in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, on an east-facing, terraced slope – a challenging site but one that is ideal for expressing the vineyard’s tension. Here, Pinot Noir grows on shallow, stony clay and limestone soils, in a continental climate that favours slow ripening, structure and ageing potential. The estate’s philosophy is not to tame the terroir, but to allow it to express itself with purity, even when that purity implies firmness and youthful austerity.
Winemaking
The winemaking process for Louis Latour Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Crots follows a classic and meticulous approach. The grapes are harvested by hand, with careful selection before they enter the winery. Fermentation takes place in the traditional manner in open vats, aiming for balanced extraction that respects the fruit’s profile. The wine then undergoes 100% malolactic fermentation, gaining depth and harmony. The wine is aged for between 10 and 12 months in French oak barrels from the Louis Latour cooperage, with 40 per cent new oak and medium toasting. This stage adds complexity, depth and a more enveloping texture, without overshadowing the cru’s identity.
Taste
In the glass, Louis Latour Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Crots displays a deep nose of cherry, blackcurrant, truffle, spices and a subtle hint of liquorice. On the palate, it is serious, firm and elegant, with restrained red and black fruit, noticeable tannins and an acidity that lengthens the finish. The oak adds notes of fine oak, sweet tobacco and a slight smoky sensation. The finish is persistent, structured and noble. A Burgundy Pinot Noir with vigour, complexity and a distinct gastronomic character.
