Buy Wine from Antonio Madeira
The Antonio Madeira winery, São Martinho, is located in the heart of Portugal, specifically in the Dão region, at the foot of the Serra da Estrela, near Pinhanços. This region, although it has enormous oenological potential, has remained in the shadows, slowly losing its heritage of old vines and indigenous varieties. Antonio Madeira, a Frenchman of Portuguese descent, has sought since 2010 to rescue this heritage, searching in the Serra da Estrela sub-region for what he calls the "Grands Crus" of the Dão highlands.
The winery was founded in 2010 and since then, Antonio has been a treasure hunter in search of gems in the region, especially old vines ranging from 50 to 130 years old.Vineyards
Antonio Madeira's vineyards are spread over small plots located between 450m and 600m altitude, on essentially granitic soils. These plots are home to a rich mixture of grape varieties, with Jaen, Baga and Tinta Amarela among the reds, and Bical, Fernão Pires, Siria, Cerceal and Arinto among the whites. This characteristic composition of the old vineyards in this area differs greatly from the choice made in the modern vineyards of Dão. Moreover, the vines are cultivated biodynamically and vinified in a natural way, taking advantage of the characteristics and nuances of their granitic soils and solar exposures.
Philosophy
Antonio Madeira's passion, dedication and precision are the pillars on which all his wines are based. At the winery, the philosophy is clear: if the vines were planted in a certain way, there was a reason for it. Therefore, all his wines are varietal blends and co-fermented. In the winery, Antonio seeks to preserve as much as possible the expressive characteristics of this imposing site and its autochthonous grape varieties. The vinifications are low-intervention, with spontaneous fermentations, little technology and without the addition of oenological products, carried out in a precise and careful manner. The result is less aromatic wines, with earthy expressions and a fine tannin structure that needs some bottle ageing to reveal its expressiveness and naturalness.
