Description
Louis Latour doesn’t need to invent a romantic story because it has had one since 1797. But with Louis Latour Marsannay Rouge, what matters is not just the weight of the family name, but the wisdom of not getting in the way of the terroir. Marsannay, the northern gateway to the Côte d’Or just outside Dijon, has always had a more earthy, more robust and less fragrant character than other appellations in Burgundy. Here, Pinot Noir grows on clay and limestone, with vines around 30 years old, producing a red that does not seek easy seduction, but rather that quintessentially Burgundian blend of vigour, composure and authenticity. The estate’s philosophy is to let the terroir speak for itself with as little interference as possible, an idea that fits naturally with Marsannay’s frank and straightforward character. No superfluous embellishments, no artifice. Just fruit, soil and tension. Marsannay, moreover, is a relatively young appellation in terms of official recognition, but one with a very distinct identity thanks to its iron-rich soils, capable of producing lively and robust wines. Louis Latour understands this well and makes no attempt to turn this wine into something more luxurious than it needs to be; he allows it to be direct, serious and delightfully honest.
Winemaking
With Louis Latour Marsannay Rouge, it’s all about preserving the character of the Pinot Noir. The grapes arrive in perfect condition, hand-harvested, and ferment traditionally in open vats to extract the flavours gently. It then undergoes 100% malolactic fermentation, refining the acidity without dampening its energy. Ageing, lasting 10 to 12 months, takes place entirely in stainless steel tanks – a decision that may lack flair but is perfectly suited to maintaining the wine’s purity and straightforward profile.
Taste
Louis Latour Marsannay Rouge opens on the nose with bitter cherry, spicy raspberry and liquorice – not exuberant, but refined, fresh and restrained. On the palate, it has breadth, but tension soon emerges: red cherry, gentle pepper, a hint of earthiness and that slightly iron-like undertone that lends it gravitas. The tannins are silky, yes, but not soft; they support the wine with elegant firmness. The finish is fresh, long and clean, more mineral than sweet. It is an unadorned Burgundy: understated, juicy and very drinkable.
