The Valencia Protected Designation of Origin groups a total of 13,000 hectares of vineyards in four subzones: Alto Turia, Moscatel, Valentino, and Clariano. Its average annual production is over 650,000 hectolitres of wine, has about 93 wineries and is made up of 85% of cooperatives. In this D.O., we can find red wines, white wines, rosé wines and even the liquor wine known as Moscatel.
Geographical and climatic characteristics of the D.O. Valencia
The excellent location of the DO Valencia, in the center of the Levantine coast, and the formidable climate mean that this wine production area produces the most intensely coloured red wines in the whole of the Levant. The climate is purely Mediterranean, although the maritime influence is less evident in inland areas. The average temperature is between 12 and 16º C, the average annual sunshine is 2600 hours of clear sunshine, and the annual rainfall is between 460 and 550 liters per square metre.
The production area of the DO Valencia comprises 68 municipalities in the province of Valencia, with four subzones. The first, Alto Turia, is the most mountainous area and the vineyard is located on terraces above 400 metres above sea level, between ravines and hills, scrubland and pines. Here the brown-limestone soils dominate, ideal for the production of dry white wines of the Merseguera variety.
The second, Clariano, is located south of the entire production area. It has brown-limy and brownish-red soils, which are looser and deeper. It is an excellent area for rosés and young reds with the Monastrell variety. For its part, the Valentino subzone is located in the center of the province. The main varieties of this subzone are Malvasia and Pedro Ximenez . Finally, the fourth subzone is Moscatel, where the famous Moscatel liqueur wine is born.
The wines of the DO Valencia
The red wines of the DO Valencia are made mainly from the varieties of the area Monastrell, Tempranillo and Tintorera, as well as others like Merlot, Garnacha Tintorera, Pinot Noir or Cabernet-Sauvignon. They are wines with ruby and violet tones. They have an intense aroma, ripe fruit, powerful, round and full-bodied.
The white wines are transparent, and their color varies from a yellow with greenish shades to a more golden tone. These are fragrant, floral and fruity wines. The varieties used for their elaboration are Merseguera, Malvasia, Macabeo, the native Verdil, as well as the recently incorporated Chardonnay (with aging in barrel) and Sémillon.
As for the rosé wines, they are elaborated with red varieties and present a wide palette of tonalities, strong and fruity aromas and fresh flavors. Finally, the Muscatel is elaborated from the must of the Roman or Alexandria Muscatel grape. It is a sweet wine, with a powerful and natural aroma and a yellow straw color.
