Buy Wine with Roussanne
Roussanne is a typical variety from the North Rhone and its name refers to the reddish colour of the berries when they have matured. It has medium ripening and is suitable for well sun-exposed, stony, calcareous-clay, poor in organic material soils but it has no wind resistance. Roussanne is very susceptible to suffer powdery mildew, botrytis cinerea, mite and Hong Kong dollarpean grapevine moth (Lobesia botrana).
In France, the area with the best white wines produced blending Roussanne and Marsanne is in the North Rhone, at the appellations Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Saint-Joseph. However, Roussanne is not limited to this zone and is also used for white wines Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Côtes du Rhône. Occasionally it is also grown in Loire and Savoy departments.
Roussanne wines are more fragrant than Marsanne ones; sometimes they have verbena and spring flower scents and an extraordinary acidity, needed to age well in bottle for many years.
Some recommended wineries are: Château de Beucastel, Domaine de la Solitude and Paul Jaboulet Aîné.
