Description

In Swartland, where the sun falls with authority and the wind polishes the landscape, the Badenhorst family learned generations ago that the vineyard is not "mastered": it is accompanied. Badenhorst Secateurs Riviera is born from this direct relationship with an old vineyard and from a courageous decision: to make a South African white wine that does not seek easy perfume, but texture, character and truth. The key parcel is a Chenin Blanc planted in 1972 next to a dry river, a place they -with Swartlander humour- call "Riviera" while working on soils of decomposed granite and sands. The grapes, gilded by the sun, are picked when the tannins are ripe: here, integrity is prioritised over obviousness. The blend is as personal as the landscape: Chenin Blanc (63%) as the backbone, with the perfumed nuance of Bukettraube (20%), the herbal edge of Sauvignon Blanc (9%) and the Mediterranean caress of Roussanne (8%).

Winemaking

At Badenhorst Secateurs Riviera, the grapes are harvested by hand and cooled overnight before arriving in the cellar. Approximately 60% of the grapes are put into concrete tanks, partly whole cluster and partly destemmed. It is elaborated as pellicular maceration / carbonic maceration: fermentation takes place with the skins, providing aromatic depth and that tannic touch so addictive. Some of the must is pressed and watered over the top to kick-start fermentation; towards the end, some of the juice is racked into old barrels and the tank is refilled with more grapes, in a continuous fermentation approach. After about three weeks, the whole is pressed. The wine then rests for 10 months on lees in used wood and is bottled straight from the barrel, without filtration, which is why it usually shows a slight cloudiness.

Taste

In the glass it does not pretend cosmetic brightness: it appears with a deeper yellow, of ripe fruit. The nose is serious and complex: grapefruit, citrus peel, quince and dried spices (white pepper, an echo of tea). On the palate, Badenhorst Secateurs Riviera is short and defined: juicy on entry, but a refreshing, fine tannic structure immediately takes over, making you salivate and begging for food. The finish is long, between bitter citrus, restrained yellow fruit and a mineral tension that whispers of granite.
