Description
Since its arrival in the Mâconnais in 2003, Domaine Leflaive - the absolute leader in Puligny Montrachet - has been committed to revealing the soul of the Verzé soils with the same precision and purity that has made them an icon of Burgundy. Leflaive Mâcon Verzé Les Chênes is born of this vision: a specific plot, facing Southwest, on shallow clay and limestone soils, where Chardonnay expresses itself with tension, minerality and restrained elegance.
The vineyard is cultivated in certified biodynamics, a philosophy rooted in the domaine since the 1990s, which seeks a profound balance between soil, plant and cosmos. Harvesting is done by hand, with strict selection in the vineyard and in the cellar, to ensure only impeccable fruit.
Winemaking
After gentle pneumatic pressing, the must of Leflaive Mâcon-Verzé Les Chênes ferments spontaneously, using indigenous yeasts, in a combination of stainless steel, concrete and a small part in French oak. The wine spends 10 months on its lees in the same fermentation tanks, and is then racked into stainless steel tanks, where it is refined for a further 6 months on fine lees. It is bottled after a light filtration, without fining, preserving its pure and direct character.
Taste
On the nose, Leflaive Mâcon-Verzé Les Chênes displays taut citrus (grapefruit, lemon), crisp pear and green apple, interlaced with subtle white flowers and a marked chalky minerality. When oxygenated, notes of raw almond and wet chalk emerge, with no trace of fruity exuberance, but with enormous aromatic clarity.
The palate is sharp and vertical, clean on entry, with precise acidity that sustains the wine from start to finish. There is texture - yes - but wrapped in tension, with saline and fresh herb echoes. The finish is dry, long, with a hint of lime and wet stone, ideal for lovers of mineral Chardonnay, Burgundian in style but with a southern soul.
