Chevalier Montrachet Grand Cru
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2017 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru delivers a vibrant but reserved bouquet of lemon zest, white flowers and crushed chalk that is still some distance from displaying all its breadth of expression. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and tensile, with a tight-knit core, searingly intense chalky extract and an electric sense of energy, concluding with a long finish. This is the most linear Chevaliers I tasted in the 2017 vintage, which was typically somewhat more open at the same stage in Anne-Claude's day, so it will be interesting to see how much plenitude it displays in bottle.

Description
Ever since the Leflaive family planted their first vines in Puligny Montrachet in 1717, their philosophy has been clear: surrender to the terroir, not dominate it. Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru is the pinnacle of that vision, a pure expression of Chardonnay, born from the high, stony, organic-poor slopes where the roots must struggle to find life. It was Anne-Claude Leflaive who, in the 1990s, challenged Burgundian orthodoxy by converting the entire domaine to biodynamics, a radical decision then, but one that today largely explains the crystalline energy of her wines. At Chevalier-Montrachet, each plot, each square metre, is worked like a garden: surgical precision in pruning, minimal intervention in the cellar, and an intimate reading of the vineyard. The soil, mostly white limestone and marl, provides an unmistakable tension and minerality.
Winemaking
The grapes for the Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru are hand-picked in small crates and pressed slowly and gently. The must ferments with indigenous yeasts in French oak barrels, approximately 25% of which are new. Ageing lasts 18 months, mostly in wood and the last months in stainless steel to refine the texture. Both alcoholic and malolactic fermentations take place spontaneously and slowly, allowing the wine to develop depth without losing precision. Bottling is done with minimal filtration.
Taste
On the nose, Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru is refined, with aromas of white fruit, citrus zest, white flowers and a marked mineral and chalky, almost saline note. The palate is taut and vibrant, with firm acidity and a texture reminiscent of polished marble. The palate is long, with layers of candied lemon, raw almond and a saline persistence that underlines its origin in the stony soils. A wine of great precision, nobility and energy that improves with age and reveals the mastery of one of Burgundy's great names.
