Domaine Leflaive
Bienvenues Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Like the Pucelles, the 2017 Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is quite tensile and reserved, unfurling in the glass with aromas of green orchard fruit, iodine, orange rind and creamy new wood. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, textural and fleshy, but taut—even firm—at the core, with good concentration, tangy acid and a bright, chalky finish. Like all these releases, I'm looking forward to seeing it from bottle.

Description
In the heart of Puligny Montrachet, where limestone peeks out from under a thin layer of clay, the Leflaive family has cultivated an intimate relationship with the land for more than a century. The decision to convert the entire domaine to biodynamics in 1997 was seen by many as an act of faith, almost radical, but for Anne-Claude Leflaive it was simply listening to the vineyard. The Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet parcel, just 1.15 ha within the Grand Cru, represents the pinnacle of this philosophy: a vineyard planted in the 1950s, where each Chardonnay vine seems to dialogue with the bedrock, distilling in each cluster the pure essence of Burgundy.
Winemaking
The vinification of Domaine Leflaive Bienvenues Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru begins with an extremely rigorous manual harvest. The grapes are slowly pressed to preserve their integrity, and the must ferments with indigenous yeasts in French oak barrels (25% new), carefully selected to provide structure without masking the terroir. Ageing is extended by 12 months in wood, followed by a further 6 months in stainless steel, which refines its texture and preserves its natural freshness. No fining is carried out and filtration is kept to a minimum, ensuring that all the energy and purity of the wine is preserved.
Taste
It shines in the glass with a faint golden colour and greenish reflections. On the nose, Domaine Leflaive Bienvenues Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru displays restrained elegance: ripe citrus, white flowers, a faint echo of hazelnut and a deep note of wet stone that anchors the wine in its terroir. The palate is taut, vibrant, with an enveloping texture that perfectly balances acidity and volume. There are notes of white peach, grapefruit, fresh butter and a saline touch that lengthens the finish with surgical precision. It is not a wine to seek immediate impact, but to be carried away by its subtle cadence and progressive complexity. It is Burgundy at its purest: austere, refined, deeply mineral.
