Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

A fine effort, the 2018 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clavoillon wafts from the glass with notes of white flowers, crisp yellow orchard fruit, fresh pastry and blanched almonds. Medium to full-bodied, bright and precise, it's elegant and fine-boned, with—as I observed last year—none of the blockiness of yesteryear's Clavoillon.

Features

Description

In the heart of Puligny Montrachet, where limestone and time seem to conspire to sculpt timeless wines, Domaine Leflaive has been elevating Chardonnay to an almost spiritual language for decades. The Premier Cru Clavoillon, one of its most emblematic parcels, is a reflection of that philosophy: a biodynamic viticulture guided more by natural rhythms than by market urgencies. This cuvée comes from vines planted between 1959 and 1988, in clay-limestone soils that offer depth and tension. In a radical gesture that marked the Maison's identity, Anne-Claude Leflaive opted to eliminate all chemical treatment in the 1990s, when it was still seen as an eccentricity. Today, this vision is synonymous with purity. Domaine Leflaive Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Clavoillon is 100% Chardonnay, crafted to express the austere yet elegant vibrancy of the Puligny terroir.

Winemaking

Domaine Leflaive Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Clavoillon is harvested by hand, with careful selection in the vineyard. The grapes are slowly pressed to obtain a clear and precise must, which is decanted for 24 hours before fermentation in French oak barrels (22% new). Ageing takes 12 months in barrels, followed by a further 6 months in stainless steel, which allows the wine to refine without losing freshness or tension. It is bottled with minimal filtration to preserve its natural energy.

Taste

Domaine Leflaive Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Clavoillon unfolds with a subtle but precise nose: citrus fruits (grapefruit, lemon ), white fruits (pear, apple ), dried flowers and a background of wet stone. As it oxygenates, hints of hazelnut, brioche and salinity emerge, adding complexity. The palate is sharp and structured, with a tense acidity that balances its creamy texture. The finish is long, marked by mineral notes, spicy hints and a lingering salinity that evokes the chalky origin of the vineyard. A wine that does not seek to impress immediately, but to conquer slowly with its precision and serene depth.
