Domaine Leflaive
Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes possesses an additional level of concentration this year, and it marks a transition in the portfolio between the charming, giving lower appellations and the rather more serious top premiers and grands crus. Unfurling in the glass with notes of crisp yellow orchard fruit, orange oil, Meyer lemon, almond paste and citrus blossom, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and nicely concentrated, with fine mid-palate amplitude, lively acids and a saline finish.

Description
Domaine Leflaive Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes is a profoundly elegant interpretation of one of the finest terroirs of the Côte de Beaune 1er Cru. In the heart of Puligny, the Leflaive family has spent generations honing a rigorous biodynamic approach that seeks more than fruit: it seeks mineral truth. The Les Combettes parcel, planted in 1963 and 1972, sits on well-drained clay-limestone soils at an altitude that spiritually connects it to the great Meursault whites. Here, the Chardonnay - the only variety used - produces small clusters, often marked by corrugation (irregular fruit set that produces berries of different sizes and greater concentration), which intensifies its natural complexity. The decision to work without concessions, under strict biodynamics, was radical at the time, but it is precisely what today gives Domaine Leflaive Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes its unmistakable character.
Winemaking
Each bunch destined for Domaine Leflaive Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes is harvested by hand, with strict selection both in the vineyard and in the cellar. Pneumatic pressing is long and delicate, followed by static decanting before fermentation in French oak barrels (22% new), where the wine rests for 12 months on fine lees. This ageing adds texture and complexity without hiding the natural nerve of the wine. It then spends 6 months in stainless steel, fine-tuning its expression with precision before bottling. Minimal use of sulphur and barely perceptible filtration allow the energy of the terroir to express itself freely.
Taste
Domaine Leflaive Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes displays a precise and restrained nose: fine citrus, green apple, white flowers and a wet chalky minerality. It does not seek opulence, but restrained intensity. The palate is straightforward, with vibrant acidity and a slender structure, reminiscent of the edge of a sharp blade. Notes of grapefruit, raw almonds and crushed stone appear. The barrel ageing is perceived as a whisper: a background of toasted bread, perfectly integrated. The finish is long, saline, with an almost electric energy. It is a wine for contemplation, for those who seek precision, tension and the purest expression of Burgundian Chardonnay.
