Description

Frank Cornelissen Munjebel Rosso FM Feudo di Mezzo-Sottana (MunJebel Rosso FM), parcel Feudo di Mezzo - Sottana is a wine jewel coming from the Etna region, in the northern valley. Specifically, it is grown in Passopisciaro, municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia. This plot, Feudo di Mezzo, is vast and it is preferred to separate the lower part (Sottana) from the upper part (Soprana or Porcaria). Although it is located further down the valley, where one would expect more robust wines, this wine stands out for an unusual elegance that characterises this area.

Winemaking

The wine is made from the Nerello Mascalese variety, coming from vines with an average age of more than 40 years. Vinification involves destemming and light crushing of the grapes. Fermentation starts spontaneously using only indigenous yeasts and skin contact for about 50 days. Ageing takes place in neutral epoxy tanks ranging from 1,500 to 2,500 litres for 18 months, followed by a further 18 months in the bottle. No fining is carried out and filtering is done before bottling with 5-micron cartridges. Sulphur values can vary between 15 and 50 mg/l, depending on the quality of the grapes and the stability of the wine.

Taste

Frank Cornelissen Munjebel Rosso FM Feudo di Mezzo-Sottana presents itself with a super intense and complex nose during the first 40 minutes. It is difficult to identify all its notes, but you can perceive aromas of rocks, roses, cherries, figs, liqueur and more. Its tannins are astringent and velvety at the same time, showing clear signs of a young wine. Its taste is reminiscent of a blend between a Barolo and a Barbaresco. However, after 40 minutes of decanting, the nose changes completely. Although it becomes less complex in some ways, it feels and tastes like a great Burgundy wine, with elegant notes on the nose of flowers, violets, strawberries and figs.
