Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The organic Frank Cornelissen 2021 Munjebel CS is Nerello Mascalese on its own roots from the Vigneto Chiusa Spagnolo across 2.5 hectares at 620 meters in elevation. The grapes are destemmed and lightly pressed to produce a lightweight red with lots of bright primary fruit and a punchy style. There is a spicy hint of entrapped carbon dioxide that you feel like a pinch on the tongue. This wine's alcohol content is an elevated 15.5%. Due to these factors, I suggest a near-term drinking window for a wine that might prove less stable in the long term. This is a release of 3,700 bottles.

Description
Frank Cornelissen Munjebel Chiusa Spagnolo, contrada Zottorinoto - Chiusa Spagnolo, is a wine that comes from the Nerello Mascalese variety. This variety is grown in a non-grafted vineyard in the Zottorinoto area, specifically in the Chiusa Spagnolo section. This vineyard, located towards the bottom of the valley and somewhat hidden in an amphitheatre surrounded by lava, is unique and was planted around 1925 at a lower altitude of 620 metres above sea level. The result is a deep and tannic wine, a bit more withdrawn and similar to Nebbiolo compared to other wines from the area.
Winemaking
Vinification begins with destemming and light crushing of the grapes. Fermentation begins with a foot of vat in which indigenous yeasts are used. The must ferments spontaneously, with 50 days of skin maceration. Ageing takes place in neutral epoxy tanks ranging from 1,500 to 2,500 litres for 18 months, followed by a further 18 months in the bottle. No fining is carried out and filtering is done before bottling with 5 micron PP cartridges. Sulphur values can vary from 15 to 50 mg/l, added or not, depending on the quality of the grapes and the stability of the wine. The annual production is approximately 3,000 bottles and its first vintage was in 2012. It can be found under the denomination Etna Rosso DOP or IGP Terre Siciliane Nerello Mascalese.
Taste
Frank Cornelissen Munjebel Chiusa Spagnolo presents a medium intensity garnet colour that immediately catches the eye. On the nose, aromas of tart red cherry, hawthorn, violet and liquorice unfold, creating an intriguing and fresh olfactory palette. On the palate, the entry is dominated by tart red cherry, accompanied by a medium-intensity upright body and juicy, medium-high acidity. Tannins, powdery in texture and of medium intensity, complement the experience, leading to a saline finish that lingers on the palate. This wine reflects the essence of natural winemaking, but offers remarkable purity on the nose.
