Description

Frank Cornelissen Munjebel Rosso CR Campo Re (Munjebel Rosso CR), Campo Re plot is a wine that comes from the local variety Nerello Mascalese. This wine originates from the Campo Re vineyard, located at the western end of the valley, at the entrance of Randazzo. The 70 year old vineyard is located at an altitude of 735 metres above sea level and is characterised by deep soil which, in wet harvests, presents great difficulties in obtaining ripe fruit. The resulting wines are deep and tannic, and more reserved and Nebbiolo-like in character compared to other crus from the same winery.

Winemaking

The vinification process begins with destemming and light crushing of the grapes. Subsequently, fermentation begins with a traditional method known as"pied-de-cuve", which uses exclusively indigenous yeasts. During this process, the grapes macerate with their skins for about 50 days, which intensifies the aromas and flavours of the wine.
Once fermentation is complete, the wine is aged in neutral epoxy tanks. In these tanks, with capacities varying between 1,500 and 2,500 litres, the wine matures for 18 months. After this period, the wine is bottled where it rests for a further 18 months, allowing its characteristics to settle and evolve. Since its first vintage in 2015, the annual production of this wine has been limited, reaching approximately 2,000 bottles.

Taste

Frank Cornelissen Munjebel Rosso CR Campo Re is a smooth wine with fine spicy tannins and a smoky touch. Its aroma evokes the forest floor. On the palate, blackberry and black cherry flavours can be identified. However, on the finish, the volcanic minerality characteristic of Frank Cornelissen's wines comes through. Also, with time in the glass, the wine becomes juicier and more expressive.
