Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières is another of the more immediate, charming wines in the range, offering up notes of crisp orchard fruit, white peach, clear honey, almond paste and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and elegantly enveloping, it's bright and fleshy, with a giving, seductive personality.

Features

Description

Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières is a refined expression of Burgundian Chardonnay, born in one of the highest and most coveted parcels in Puligny. A pioneer in biodynamic viticulture since the 1990s, the Leflaive family has forged its reputation through an intimate relationship with the land and a philosophy of minimal intervention, always opting for wines that accurately reflect their origin. Les Folatières, with its stony and sparse soil, forces the vines to go deep, generating grapes with exceptional concentration and mineral tension. It was a brave decision to go for this "climat": a challenging terroir but one capable of producing wines of enormous complexity and longevity.

Winemaking

Domaine Leflaive Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières is made exclusively from Chardonnay, harvested by hand at the right moment of ripeness. After gentle pressing, the must is clarified and fermented in oak barrels (20% new), which gives structure without dominating the expression of the terroir. Ageing is extended by 12 months in wood, followed by an additional 6 months in stainless steel, which refines and balances the wine before bottling. The absence of invasive techniques and the respect for natural cycles allow for a pure, sincere and profound expression of the vineyard.

Taste

Domaine Leflaive Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières opens with aromas of white flowers, lemon zest and fresh apple, followed by notes of melon, pear and a faint echo of toasted hazelnut. The minerality is prominent, evoking wet stone and chalk, with an almost crystalline purity. On the palate, it is precise and vibrant: marked but integrated acidity brings energy, while the silky texture supports an elegant, subtly saline mid-palate. The finish is long, taut and refined, with a lingering mineral echo. It is a wine of elegant restraint, more subtle than exuberant, perfect for accompanying fine seafood or simply contemplating its evolution in the glass. A lesson in precision and Burgundian nobility.
