Description
Anders Frederik Steen does not make wines to fit a mould, but to capture the truth of a vintage, even when it is flawed. No One Wears Me Like You was born in 2021, in an Alsace region ravaged by a severe outbreak of mildew that reduced the harvest to a fraction of its usual size. Where others might have taken the easy way out or given up, Steen made a bold decision: to harvest all the plots at the same time and press all the available Alsatian grape varieties together. Not on a whim, but because the scarcity made any single-vineyard or varietal wine impossible. And it was precisely from this necessity that something deeply authentic emerged.
The grapes come from the Bannwarth family in Obermorschwihr, in a part of Alsace steeped in rural tradition, characterised by a continental climate and vineyards capable of producing both fragrance and structure. This Vin de France Blanc brings together Muscat, Gewürztraminer, the three Pinots, Sylvaner and Chasselas, forming an unusual blend that speaks more of the vineyard and the vintage than of a preconceived formula.
Production
All the plots were harvested and pressed together, so that Anders Frederik Steen No One Wears Me Like You was blended from the very outset. The must first spent six months in fibreglass tanks, where it retained its initial energy without any artificial enhancement. It then continued its ageing in oak barrels for a total of three and a half years before being released onto the market. As is customary with Steen, the barrels were not refilled, allowing for deliberate oxidative ageing that now defines the wine’s character.
Flavour
On the nose, the exuberant side of Muscat and Gewürztraminer comes through first, with citrus peel, dried flowers and spices. Next come the Pinots, bringing tension and depth, whilst Sylvaner and Chasselas lighten the overall profile with a more straightforward and lively fruitiness. The oxidative ageing adds notes of dried apple, quince, light tea and delicate nuts. On the palate, it is full-bodied and silky, yet also briny and dry, with a slight, noble bitterness that makes it highly food-friendly. Anders Frederik Steen’s ‘No One Wears Me Like You’ is a unique, unusual and utterly beautiful white wine.
