Description
Anders Frederik Steen does not view wine as a product, but rather as a sensitive response to the vintage. Anders Frederik Steen Early Eyes was born precisely out of an extreme situation: in 2021, he lost 100 per cent of the grapes from his own vineyards and, rather than forcing a soulless solution, he decided to bring Riesling from the Bannwarth family in Alsace to his winery in Valvignères. There, he blended it with a small proportion of Viognier from Domaine du Mazel. This gesture alone is a statement of principle: accepting the challenge, transforming it and turning it into character. The wine thus brings together two very distinct styles: the austere, straightforward minerality of Alsatian Riesling and the warmer, sun-kissed fruit of the south. Under the flexibility of the Vin de France appellation, this white wine reflects a deeply artisanal, intuitive and courageous philosophy.
Production
Once in the cellar, Anders Frederik Steen Early Eyes took shape through the blending of Riesling with a small percentage of Viognier, and the must fermented in 500-litre demi-muids. It remained there until May 2024—nearly three years—undergoing an extremely long ageing process aimed more at achieving the wine’s internal balance than at any external influence from the wood. After bottling, Steen felt that the wine was not yet in balance. Rather than releasing it onto the market, he decided to keep it for a further year in the bottle to allow it to find its centre. That patience perfectly defines his approach: listening to the wine rather than the calendar.
Taste
In the glass, Anders Frederik Steen Early Eyes displays a restrained yet deep nose, characterised by a serious, stony, almost saline minerality. The Viognier does not bring exuberance, but rather a gentle, fleshy quality of yellow fruit, apricot skin and ripe white flesh. On the palate, it combines breadth and tension with great precision. The acidity cuts through the whole with vigour, whilst notes of lemon zest, grapefruit, dried herbs and damp stone emerge. There is texture, there is energy, and also a subtle bitterness that lengthens the finish and gives it a highly gastronomic profile. This is not an easy or complacent white wine, but one of contrast, depth and lasting impression.
