Description
Go Visit Nature Before It Is Too Late stems from a deeply Andersian idea: to take a variety as easily recognisable as Viognier and push it far beyond its comfort zone. Anders Frederik Steen is not seeking obvious aromas or easy exuberance, but rather the truth of the wine, even if that truth is rougher, saltier, or even more uncomfortable. For this white wine, he draws on the old vines of Domaine du Mazel, in Valvignères, tended by Jocelyne and Gérald Oustric, in a landscape of the Ardèche where the light, the dryness and the vigour of the soil tend to produce wines of great presence. Bottled as a Vin de France and with an alcohol content of 13.75%, this Viognier white is born of a very free relationship with the terroir and the raw material. There is also a bold decision here: to tame not the grape itself, but its excess, stripping it of its most boisterous tropical fruit notes to reveal a more serious, more restrained and far deeper expression.
Production
The winemaking process for Anders Frederik Steen’s ‘Go Visit Nature Before It Is Too Late’ begins with direct pressing of the grapes for five days in Mazel’s old wooden wine press, although only the must from the first four days is used; that from the fifth day is set aside for another wine. Even at this early stage, one can sense a winemaking process guided by sensitivity and experience. After a couple of days’ fermentation in fibreglass tanks, the fermenting must is transferred to old barrels. There it finishes fermenting and remains until bottling in May 2025, having been aged for just over two and a half years. The barrel does not impart a woody flavour, but rather provides slow oxygenation, depth and a gradual evolution that completely transforms the Viognier’s profile.
Flavour
On the nose, there is no exotic explosion or ostentatious bouquet. Anders Frederik Steen’s ‘Go Visit Nature Before It Is Too Late’ operates on a much more restrained register, with ripe yellow fruit, candied citrus, lemon in brine, olives and a hint of fine olive oil. On the palate, it is full-bodied and textured, yet taut with a noble bitterness and a briny acidity that gives it edge. The finish is long, serious and food-friendly, with hints of citrus peel, dried herbs and a beautifully oxidative sensation. A Viognier white wine that is far from complacent, yet deeply authentic.
