Description
Born of Anders Frederik Steen’s free and deeply sensitive intuition, *Again Yesterday I Was Feeling Young* seems conceived more as a fluid emotion than as a conventional white wine. Steen belongs to that rare breed of winemakers who prefer to listen to the energy of the harvest rather than impose a set formula, and here he finds the perfect setting for this in the fruit from the Bannwarth family in Obermorschwihr. Anders Frederik Steen’s *Again Yesterday I Was Feeling Young*, made from Pinot Blanc and Gewürztraminer, reflects a bold and far from obvious decision: to allow the Pinot Blanc to set the tone first, leaving the Gewürztraminer initially in the background, almost like a deeper echo that takes time to reveal itself. Alsace, with its continental climate, long tradition and ability to produce white wines of great aromatic precision, provides the ideal backdrop here.
Production
For Anders Frederik Steen’s ‘Again Yesterday I Was Feeling Young’, the grapes are pressed directly on the day of harvest – first the Pinot Blanc and, a few days later, the Gewürztraminer – in an effort to capture their full expression with the utmost purity. The latter also exhibits a beautiful noble rot, which is crucial to the wine’s depth. After a few days of oxidation, the must is transferred to fibreglass tanks, where it ferments slowly over the winter, initially outdoors. In the spring, after racking, the wine completes its fermentation in the cellar and spends two years in old, unfilled barrels. This ageing process results in minimal oxidation—barely a whisper—enough to add depth without compromising the delicacy of the Pinot Blanc.
Flavour
On the nose, Anders Frederik Steen’s ‘Again Yesterday I Was Feeling Young’ is almost more reminiscent of a perfume than a conventional white wine. The Pinot Blanc emerges first, with white roses, jasmine, firm white peach and a delicate, luminous salinity. Then, as it breathes, the Gewürztraminer gains depth, richness and a more mature, sensual and enveloping nuance. On the palate, it is silky, aromatic and precise, with layers ranging from floral to spicy, from delicate to deep. An Alsace wine of true balance, where even the slightest aroma finds its voice.
