Steeped in history, the Viña Mein winery is located in the Avia Valley, in the D.O. Ribeiro, Galicia. The winery was founded in 1988, recovered in 2019 by Alma Carraovejas, and nowadays the winegrower Emilio Rojo is committed to native varieties and works the estate with the firm conviction of producing a quality artisanal wine, based on a careful viticulture work.
Viña Mein vineyards
In the history books of Galicia, we can find the Meín estate as one of the first settlements of population, born in the shadow of the Monastery of San Clodio, an emblematic place linked to the origin of viticulture in the Ribeiro region in the 11th and 12th centuries.The ancestral vineyards of Viña Meín extend over 17 hectares, and are distributed in small plots with different orientations where sábrego or decomposed granite soils predominate. They are arranged in terraces, terraces and socalcos, heritage of the millenary cultivation of the valley, where the vine was a monoculture since the 13th century.
Highlighting its varietal richness, a wide diversity of native varieties of white grapes (Treixadura, Godello, Albariño, Caíño blanco, Loureira, Lado, Torrontés) and reds (Caíño longo, Brancellao and a small plot of Garnacha) are grown on slopes and terraces.
Viña Maín works with manual harvesting based on the knowledge of each variety and plot, respecting the time of each grape, each plot and each variety within the same vineyard. Emilio Rojo seeks to produce wines based on agronomy and ecology, applying the knowledge of science to the cultivation of the land.

For the production of their wines, depending on the variety and the plot of origin, they use the materials that least alter the natural character of the grapes and the vineyard. In the winery they work with stainless steel tanks of small capacities and different volumes and woods, foudres, open vats, different styles of barrels and concrete eggs. A wine that expresses the exuberance of the Ribeiro landscape and its smallholdings is Viña Meín 2018, a non-crianza white wine.
