Rías Baixas is a wine-growing area located in the northwest of Spain, in the region of Galicia.
Its essential purpose has been the recovery of centenary vineyards of little-known red varieties, such as Caíño, Espadeiro and Loureiro, as well as white Albariño.
A history of effort and tradition
The story goes that in 1912, Francisco Méndez, great-grandfather of the generation that works on the property today, planted his first Albariño vineyard at Finca El Torno, located in the town of Meaño, in the Salnés sub-area, province of Pontevedra, and began to produce his own wine.
Following the tradition of his grandfather, Rodrigo Méndez, in 2005, he began his project of making red wines, which established him as one of the best winemakers in the region.
His wines are made with love for detail and passion for good wine, looking for the best estates and respecting the interaction of the variety with the site.
Location of the winery
The origin of the name of the winery is due to a mussel pan company founded by Rodrigo Méndez's grandfather.
The Forjas del Salnés winery is located in the Salnés region, in the province of Pontevedra. They currently have a maximum production capacity of 20,000 litres, including white and red wines.
These wines are produced under the supervision of Raúl Pérez, one of the most renowned oenologists on the international scene, achieving magnificent scores for Forjas del Salnés wines.
Vineyards
From the beginning of its creation, the founders of this winery have been very careful in the selection of the vineyards, looking for and recovering old vineyards and working organically with the essential treatments.
Rodrigo Méndez has managed to recover old vineyards, working with organic methods, producing and marketing the red varieties of Rías Baixas. His aim is to continue making modern, continental wines in Rías Baixas.
The vines are trained using vine training methods. It works in seven estates, these are: El Torno, Xesteira and A Telleira for Albariño and Aimeirón, Xacobeira de Abaixo and Xesteira de Abaixo exclusively for reds.
Grape varieties
In the beginning, Loureira, Caíño and Espadeiro grape varieties were predominant in the Rías Baixas vineyards. However, nowadays Albariño is also considered the most popular grape variety in Galicia.
The attention to detail, the search for the best vineyards, the use of native varieties and the passion for good wine make the wines of the Bodega Forjas del Salnés balanced, with a pronounced but ripe acidity and full of character.
