The nose of the 2020 Goliardo A Telleira Caíño made me think of a red Burgundy, perfumed and elegant, spicy and floral. The wine has an austere palate, light to medium-bodied with clean aromas and flavors, very fine tannins and an elegant finish. 600 bottles were filled in January 2023.

Description
Goliardo A Telleira Caiño is a red wine produced by the Forjas del Salnés winery, a young project with a great family tradition in the Rías Baixas region of Galicia. This wine is made exclusively from Caiño grapes, a variety native to Galicia and northern Portugal. The vineyard, more than 45 years old, is located in Dena(Meaño), only 10 metres above sea level. The vines are planted on sandy soils with pebbles, which gives a distinctive mineral character to the wine. The vines are cultivated in pergola, a traditional system in the area that facilitates ventilation and sun exposure of the clusters, and has a planting density of 1200 vines per hectare. The Atlantic climate brings freshness and acidity to the wine, key factors for its longevity and complexity.
Winemaking
As for the winemaking process, the grapes are harvested by hand to select the best bunches. Fermentation is spontaneous, carried out in600-litre open barrels with indigenous yeasts, which ensures a genuine expression of the terroir. Ageing is spread over 24 months: the first 12 months in used French oak barrels with seven previous vintages, which softens the tannins and balances the wine; and the other 12 months in new 600-litre French oak barrels, which provide structure and subtle oak notes. This minimalist approach to vinification ensures that the wine retains the full expression of the Caiño variety and the terroir of the plot.
Taste
On the palate, Goliardo A Telleira Caiño is characterised by vibrant freshness and excellent acidity, balanced by very fine and elegant tannins . The predominant flavours are of wild red fruits such as raspberries and redcurrants, along with balsamic notes of eucalyptus and spices such as cloves. The mineral character of the sandy soil is also present, providing great depth and a silky texture. The finish is long, persistent and enveloping, leaving a fresh and herbaceous aftertaste that invites further drinking. This wine, with a very limited production, is ideal to accompany game dishes, traditional stews or grilled red meats.
In short, Goliardo A Telleira Caiño is a wine with an elegant profile, delicate structure and great ageing potential, reflecting both the character of the Caiño grape and the uniqueness of its terroir.
