Sousón has its origin in the Minho region, at the northeast of Portugal, where it is the main variety still today. It has medium to late budding and ripening. In Portugal, Sousón berries have thick skin and clusters are medium sized, while in Spain clusters are smaller and packed, with medium to small berries. Sousón has good resistance to vineyard pests and diseases.
Sousón wines have a deep, dark colour; this is the red variety that brings forth the darker and denser Portuguese red wines. This is due to the anthocyanin pigments present in the berries' skin. Sousón wines are well structured, with personality, high acidity and cherries and wild fruits flavours. Some recommended producers are: Aphros, Quinta da Palmirinha, Quinta da Raza, Quinta de Carapeços and Quinta de Gomariz.
In Spain, Sousón variety is authorised at the appellations Rías Baixas, Ribeiro, Monterrei and Valdeorras. There is no doubt that the best Sousón producer is Quinta da Muradella.
