Description
On the vertiginous slopes of Amandi, where the Ribeira Sacra overlooks the abyss of the Sil River, Pedro Rodríguez continues a family tradition with a rebellious spirit. The son and grandson of winegrowers, Pedro transformed the wine that his family once sold in demijohns to local canteens into an authentic expression of the terroir. They founded Guímaro - Galician for "rebel" - in 1991, and were among the first to join the Ribeira Sacra DO when it was founded in 1996. While many abandoned these difficult lands, Pedro opted to stay, to cultivate the rugged and to bottle identity. Guímaro Camiño Real is born from old vines planted on slate and follows the old horse track that crosses these impossible slopes. A wine that is landscape, memory and conviction.
Guímaro Camiño Real is composed mainly of Mencía, accompanied by small proportions of Brancellao, Caiño, Merenzao and other autochthonous varieties that contribute unique nuances.
Winemaking
Guímaro Camiño Real is made from a manual harvest, forced by the extreme slope of the vineyards. The grapes are fermented with indigenous yeasts in used French oak vats, with approximately 60% whole cluster, for 45 days. This traditional and respectful process preserves both the freshness and structure of the wine. After fermentation, Guímaro Camiño Real is aged for 10 to 12 months in 5,000-litre foudres and 500-litre barrels. It is neither filtered nor clarified, and only receives a minimal dose of sulphur dioxide. An honest and restrained winemaking process that allows the soil and the variety to express themselves authentically.
Taste
Guímaro Camiño Real is a wine of restrained tension. On the nose it offers aromas of sour cherry, wild raspberry, violets and black tea, with an earthy and mineral background, marked by slate. The palate is agile and nervous, with vibrant acidity and fine tannins. Fresh red fruit coexists with notes of mild spices and a delicate smokiness. The finish is long, saline, with an echo of scrubland. A red wine with an Atlantic character and a Galician soul, which does not seek to impress by weight, but by precision, freshness and an authenticity that only comes from extreme vineyards.
