Buy Wine with Callet
Callet is a Majorcan variety declared to be a crossing between Palomino Fino and Verdil in the Vitis International catalogue. In Majorcan the word Callet means “black”.
Callet variety is fruitful in deep soils with late ripening. It is resistant to diseases in general and likely to suffer downy mildew and acid rot, as clusters are packed and crammed. Callet variety is also well acclimated to drought.
Traditionally Callet has been cultivated together with Fogoneu variety, so the winemaker can blend them to produce red wine. At the same time, Mantonegro variety can also be a part of the blend providing a fruity touch without tannins. Callet is authorised in the designations of origin Benissalem and Pla i Llevant (at the Balearic Islands), well adapted to red coloured clay and sandy soils on the outskirts of Felanitx, especially where performance is low.
Callet wines can be rather rustic, with alcohol low content and are normally soft red wines and light rosé wines. Nonetheless the trend is to produce wine with fine and elegant tannins, where sometimes a small proportion of foreign varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Tempranillo. Callet wines acidity is moderate but enough to achieve a good balance and freshness producing mineral character, dynamic and violet scented wines.
The most renowned producer in Mallorca is Anima Negra Viticultors, who use Callet variety to produce exceptional wines. Other interesting wineries are 4 kilos, Macià Batle and Olivier Moragues.
