Description
Emilien Feneuil is part of that new wave of Montagne de Reims vignerons who do not "design" Champagne: they let it speak. At Chamery (Premier Cru), on the slopes of Les Goulats, he understood that rosé could be more than just a fruity nod: a direct reading of Pinot Noir (100%) and its place. The vineyard, with mature vines (around four decades old), is worked with an organic/biodynamic mentality, without synthetic chemistry, seeking living soils and natural yields. The site provides the Champenoise duality: a layer of clay and sand on top and, nearby, the limestone that cools the pulse of the wine and pushes it towards the mineral. It is said that one of his bravest decisions was to go for an uncompromising style - no make-up - even when it meant giving up aromatic "ease". Here, precision rules, not applause.
Elaboration
At Emilien Feneuil Les Goulats Rosé de Macération, the grapes are strictly selected and worked with minimal intervention. The key feature is the maceration: the colour and structure come from the brief contact with the skins (no blending), achieving a rosé Champagne with a vinous profile. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts in used barrels, aiming for slow oxygenation with no wood flavour. The wine is then transferred to the bottle for secondary fermentation and rests for a long time on the lees (several years) to gain depth and texture. Disgorgement is carried out in a traditional manner and, true to its idea of purity, it is usually bottled without dosage.
Taste
In the glass, Emilien Feneuil Les Goulats Rosé de Macération appears a pale pink with a cool glow. The nose is not caramel: first a chalky, almost wet chalky note emerges, then fine red fruits(wild strawberry, raspberry) with hints of grapefruit and blood orange. The palate is dry, taut and athletic: very fine bubbles, sculpting acidity, and a Pinot Noir texture that is more in feel than in fruit. The finish leaves salinity and a noble citrus peel bitterness: straight, mineral, serious... and dangerously drinkable.
