Description
Emilien Feneuil belongs to that rare breed of Champagne vignerons who first become obsessed with the vineyard and only later with the label. For years he sold grapes; when he finally decided to bottle under his own name, he made a courageous decision: to start without shortcuts, relying on vigneron friends but keeping the essentials to himself - the harvest and, above all, the pressing - because for him that is where the soul of the wine is at stake.
Emilien Feneuil Les Basses Croix & Les Gillis Blanc de Blancs 1er Cru was born from a simple and radical idea: to unite two 1er Cru sites in a single line, without any make-up. It is a 100% Chardonnay Blanc de Blancs from Sermiers (Montagne de Reims), a region better known for Pinots, but capable of producing Chardonnays with nerve and edge. Here the limestone with clay blends and a saline imprint rule; the northern climate refines the ripeness and leaves that natural tension that is not built, it is inherited.
Winemaking
At Emilien Feneuil Les Basses Croix & Les Gillis Blanc de Blancs 1er Cru, the grapes go in with strict selection and harvesting designed to preserve energy rather than opulence. Emilia gives enormous weight to the pressing, seeking only the finest, cleanest and straightest juices. Barrel fermentation is not intended to perfume, but to give texture and slow micro-oxygenation. Then comes patience: prolonged ageing on the lees (around four years in bottle), which polishes the bubbles and broadens the wine without slowing it down. Very restrained dosage style / Brut Nature, with minimal intervention: clarity, precision and silence.
Taste
In Emilien Feneuil Les Basses Croix & Les Gillis Blanc de Blancs 1er Cru, in the glass it is not "perfume and applause", but minerality and subsoil. At first it can be reserved, with an air of restrained pear and peach, a fine floral wink and the citrus trace of lemon zest rather than sweet lemon. The palate is surprisingly vinous, almost like a still wine with bubbles: fleshy, creamy, with fine bubbles that push without clogging. The acidity is a taut column that stretches the centre of the palate and leads into a saline, stony trail, with echoes of hazelnut and minimal toast, more warm bread than brioche. Gastronomic Champagne, for seafood, fish and poultry with light sauces: a serious, upright blanc de blancs, for those who enjoy it when the wine doesn't shout fruit - it whisperschalky and salty.
